Fatal Pulmonary Thromboembolism Following Spinal Anesthesia for Cesarean Section

Abstract
The maternal mortality rate continued to decline since 1940. However, pulmonary thromboembolism, first identified as the leading cause of maternal death in 1970s, continues to account for an increasing proportion of maternal deaths.
The main or major cause of maternal deaths were pulmonary thromboembolism, haemorrhage, ectopic pregnancy, pregnancy induced hypertension complication and infection. Re cently, deaths by pulmonary thromboembolism may be becoming more importent
as
a
cause of maternal dath.
We present a cause of fatal pulmonary emblosim, which was diagnosed by lung-perfusion scan and pulmonary angiography on the postoperative 2 day after cesarean section for which the patient was given a spinal anaesthesia.
In our knowledge, we belive it to be the first time this problem case following spinal anesthesia for cesarean section has been reported in Korea.
